Rameshwaram probably doesn't needs any introduction. Being one of the most revered Hindu sites, the holy city is located on a beautiful and interesting island that is about 2 km away from the mainland of the country. Largely refereed as the Kashi of the South, Rameshwaram simply finds a spot in the itineraries of every spiritualist in India. In addition, the holy city is also rapidly gaining fame as a popular tourist spot not just in India but in the entire world. The old temples, sacred water tanks, and other religious sites in the city are the popular points of interest of the city that immediately grabs the attention of many.

Of the various revered religious spots in the holy city, there is one that is an ancient temple dedicated to lord Shiva. The temple is called the Ramanathaswamy Temple and is one of the most important temples in the city. In the centre of the temple dwells a lingam, which is believed to be the Earthly form of god Shiva. The lingam is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga which are believed to be the most significant lingams of the lord, spread all across the nation. According to a popular belief this lingam is actually established by the goddess Sita, the wife of lord Rama. It is conceived that in the era of god Rama, the god asked lord Hanumana to bring a lingam from the Himalayas, since the god wanted to absolve the sin of killing a Brahman, which he committed during his war against the demon lord Ravana. As it took longer for lord Hanuman to bring the lingam, so goddess Sita established a lingam in the place that was made of the shore’s sand. Today, millions of devotees and pilgrims throng to the holy city just to get a glimpse of the lingam and to pray to it.

Today, there exist two lingams inside the temple, one that was established by goddess herself, and the other that was brought by lord Hanumana from the himalayas. The earlier one is called Ramalingam and the later is called Viswalingam. It is a tradition to worship Viswalingam lingam first, as it is believed that god Rama himself instructed to worship the Viswalingam first. An interesting fact of the temple. The temple is home to the longest corridor in all the Hindu temples dotted in India.

Apart from being a religious site with immense reverence, the temple is also a visual delight to watch. The temple is a beautiful structure that features several wonderful small sculptures, intrinsic designs and carvings, a corridor with hundreds of stunning pillars, and many others. The temple remains open for visit throughout the year and never goes vacant of people. A must visit place in the city, a tour of the temple is simply refreshing and pleasing. The good thing is that there lies a couple of good Rameswaram hotels sharing an excellent connectivity to the temple.
