Harsil: An Unspoiled Village & Mini Switzerland of India

This hilly town present in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand falling on the way of the pious Hindu pilgrimage route of Gangotri. Situated at a height of 7,860 feet from sea level, Harsil sits on the banks of River Bhagirathi among the calm and serene environment of Garhwal Himalayas. The enchantingly unexplored valley offers picturesque views of the river water floating calmly between the massive hills dotted with tall pine trees. Harsil Weather Conditions

  • Summer (24 to 8 degrees Celsius) - weather in Harsil remains pleasant and cool throughout the year. Summer is the best time to plan your trip to Harsil since the paths will be clear and you will be able to savour the picturesque views from this hill town. Carry light woolen winter wear. 
  • Monsoon - just like every other hilly terrain it is advised for you to avoid your travels during these months of rain. Trekking and excursions should not be done during monsoon since the entire region is prone to unexpected landslides. Be sure to carry umbrellas and raincoats in case you visit Harsil during this season.
  • Winter (14 to -2 degree Celsius) - winter season witnesses immense snowfall in the entire region of Harsil dropping the temperature to below zero. Excursions and trekking are to be avoided during this season since all the places will be inaccessible since it will be covered in a thick layer of white snow. Be sure to carry heavy woolen clothes and other accessories like woolen caps, gloves and other.

  • Sat Ral - this is a collection of 7 lakes which is surrounded by enchanting surroundings. This unique place is located at a distance of 6 Km from Harsil and is a breathtaking spot for nature lovers and peace seekers alike.
  • Gangotri - situated at a distance of 24 km from Harsil on the banks of River Ganga, this prime pilgrimage destination is taken up by numerous Hindu devotees during the open season. Gangotri Mandir is open only for a short span of time during which all the pilgrims are expected to pay their visit. 
  • Dharali - located at a distance of 3 km from Harsil and well connected by a series of motor-able roads this picturesque and off beat destination is one of the most unexplored and untouched places near Harsil. It is known for its apple orchards and other commercial plantations.
  • Mukhwas Village - this is one of the most popular tourist attractions around Harsil, which is located at a distance of 1 km. It is known for being the winter abode of goddess Gangotri.

  • Trekking - Harsil is truly a paradise for trekkers and adventure seekers. The region is filled with tall oak and deodar tree forests which makes is one of the prime destination for people looking to trek among the lap of nature. You will witness cascading waterfalls and irregular hills, gushing river water and the ever dominant greenery. 
  • Pilgrimage - Harsil lies in the way of Gangotri Dham pilgrimage. During winter months, when it snows heavily, the roads to this temple are closed due to inaccessibility. Goddess Ganga is brought down to Mukhba village (1 km from Harsil) where devotees are able to seek the blessings of the goddess. 
  • Experience eco-tourism - Harsil actively promotes and encourages eco-tourism i.e. visitors are given an experience of a serene environment. Tourists can be a part of the rustic way of village life, beliefs and community.

Situated on a hill station this small and quaint village of Harsil in Uttarakhand has managed stay away from the eyes of frequent tourists. Accommodation available here are not as lavish as the ones in the popular tourist destinations of Nainital or Mussoorie. A small handful of budget hotels, guesthouses and home stays are present here. The government has also set up a GMVN guesthouse here to accommodate visitors. 

Harsil Location

This magnificent hill town is located at a distance of 72 km from Uttarkashi on Gangotri road. The entire town is surrounded by mesmerizing beauty, gushing shimmering water and rolling hills showcasing the different hues of green. Situated at a height of 2,620 metres above sea level the town witnesses intense snowfall during the winter season. Lined with deodar and apple trees the entire region is a prime destination for photography enthusiasts, adventure enthusiasts and travelers.
