History of Udaipur

Udaipur, the former capital of Mewar (Rajput kingdom), built around the placid water of four lakes was founded by Rana Udai Singh of the Sisodia clan in 1559 AD.

In 1568, the Mughal emperor Akbar captured Chittor, and Rana Udai Singh re-located his ancient capital of Nagda on the Banas River northeast of Udaipur to his residence site, presently known as city of Udaipur. It was a princely state of British Empire in 1818. Today, counted amongst the prominent cities of the Rajasthan state post Indian Independence in 1947.

Tourism in Udaipur

Built at different times from 1559 onwards, stands massive arrays of palaces on the east bank of Lake Pichola that offer panoramic views of the skyline merging with the grandeur of the artificial marvel. Rejuvenate your senses in the Nehru Garden amidst the Fateh Sager Lake, or enjoy a puppet show at the museum of folk arts -Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal.

The period from 1743-1746 laid the foundation of marvelous Lake Palace. Carved from marble, it is on Jag Niwas Island in Lake Pichola. Originally built as a royal summer palace, today operates under the banner of Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces as a Five-Star luxury hotel.

The summer resort of the Rajput Maharajas, Monsoon Palace, situated atop hill oversees the placid lakes. Sajjan Garh Palace as referred by the locals, devised a method to collect rainwater for consumption round the year.

For travelers who enjoy the company of roses, animals and ancient manuscripts, Gulab Bagh situated on the east of Lake Pichhola is a perfect place to visit. Laid out by Maharaja Sajjan, the garden boasts of a library and zoo. The garden library offers a collection of ancient handwritten manuscripts and books. Enjoy wildlife within the garden, as your family enjoys a mini-train ride, encompassing prime areas of the garden and the zoo.

Doodh Talai offers awe-inspiring views of sunset at Lake Pichhola. Enjoy ropeway that connects this rock and fountain garden to Karni Mata temple.

Built in the memory of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Nehru Garden spread in 41 acres, celebrates his birth with flower gardens and a lily pond. The garden surmounts the ancient Moti Mahal and Aravalli hills on three sides.

The Jagdish Temple , built by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1651 A.D is an exquisite example of Indo - Aryan architecture.

Bohara Ganesh Ji located near Thokar railway station and MLS University, believed to be miraculous. Hoards of devotees gather here every Wednesday.

Other popular tourist destinations involve Udaipur Solar Observatory and Sukhadia Circle. Located in the middle of the Lake Fatehsagar, the observatory is the Asia’s only solar observatory.

Built in the northern suburb, on the road to Ranakpur and Mt. Abu, Sukhadia Circle is a popular recreational center.
